Damballah & Ayida-Weddo

The most venerable of the lwa: the great white serpent older than speech, arcing with his rainbow wife as the double rainbow.

Damballah & Ayida-Weddo

Carried across the Middle Passage in memory alone, the rainbow serpent of Dahomey surfaced in Haiti as Damballah Wedo: the great white serpent, oldest and most venerable of the lwa — so ancient he precedes speech, communicating in whistles and presence, associated with purity, peace and the wisdom of beginnings. His devotees wear white; his offering is an egg. Beside him arcs his wife Ayida-Weddo, the rainbow serpent; together they appear as the double rainbow — the covenant that the storm is over and the world will hold. A people stripped of everything kept, as their highest image of the divine, gentleness that holds the world together.

The SGE Reading

Essence tested by history: beneath everything that was done, benevolence held as the foundation — the deepest weather report a people can give.

Canon Resonance

The offering is an egg: the series' central object, given to the oldest serpent, in the gentlest religion of the serpent on Earth.

A Micro-Practice

Once this month, make a small white offering — an egg, flour, a candle — to whatever in your life is oldest and gentlest.

Respectful use

Vodou is a living religion long misrepresented; describe with dignity, avoid sensationalism, and do not adapt ritual.
