Mehen

'The Coiled One' — the serpent who wraps protectively around the sun-god through the hours of the night.

Mehen

While Apep attacks the sun-barque nightly, another serpent rides aboard it: Mehen, the Coiled One, wrapped in protective rings around Ra through the twelve hours of the underworld. Egypt held the full polarity in a single species — the serpent that assaults the light and the serpent that enshields it, on the same boat, every night. Mehen also names one of humanity's oldest board games, a spiral of the coiled serpent played in the Old Kingdom: the protective coil as a path to be traveled, square by square, toward the center.

The Great Correspondence

The Night Watch

Nüwa & Fuxi, serpent-bodied, gave humanity the 64 trigrams. The 64 descends from a serpent's hand. Here are this serpent's threads in the lattice.

The SGE Reading

Gift as escort: the same serpentine power that threatens can be enlisted as the night-journey's bodyguard.

Canon Resonance

For every dark passage in the series: the traveler who recruits the coil arrives at dawn.

A Micro-Practice

Entering a hard season, name your Mehen — the practice that will coil around you nightly — and keep it aboard.
