The Azure Dragon (Qīnglóng)
One of the four celestial guardians — the dragon of the east, of spring, of dawn, of the rising of things.
Chinese astronomy divides the sky into four great symbols, each a quadrant of seven lunar mansions: the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, the Black Tortoise of the North. Qīnglóng governs east, dawn, spring, the wood element, the rising of sap and of years — its constellation-body climbing the evening sky as the year turns green. In city planning, temple placement and feng shui, the dragon's side is the left, the side of beginnings. The serpent-power assigned a compass direction and a season: whatever begins, begins under the dragon.
