Ryūjin and Yamata no Orochi

Inside the tail of the eight-headed Orochi, Susanoo finds the sword Kusanagi — Japan's founding treasure, hidden in a dragon's body.

Ryūjin and Yamata no Orochi

Ryūjin, the dragon god of the sea, rules the tides with jewels from his palace Ryūgū-jō; the imperial line descends from his daughter. And Yamata no Orochi, the eight-headed serpent, is slain by Susanoo — who finds inside its tail the sword Kusanagi, one of the three imperial regalia. Japan's founding treasure was found *inside the dragon's body*. The gift is always inside the shadow.
