The Gnostic Ophites

The Gnostic sect who venerated the Eden serpent as the first liberator — history's most radical serpent-rehabilitation.

The Gnostic Ophites

The Gnostic Ophites venerated the Eden serpent as the first liberator — the giver of gnosis against the jealous demiurge — history's most radical serpent-rehabilitation. Whatever one thinks of their theology, they document that inside the West's own dominant tradition, there was always a minority reading in which the serpent of Genesis 3 was the *hero*, not the villain.

The SGE Reading

Gift stage as *hermeneutic courage*: even inside the tradition most hostile to the serpent, a small circle refused the settled reading and kept the older gift alive.

Canon Resonance

The Western warrant for the saga's willingness to re-read every serpent story that ended with a slain dragon.

A Micro-Practice

Pick one story you were taught to read one way, and re-read the villain in it.
