Cipactli

The primordial sea-reptile whose body became the earth. Every step is taken on the back of a sleeping saurian.

Cipactli

In Nahua cosmogony the fifth world is made from the body of Cipactli, the primordial sea-reptile. The gods tore her apart to fashion sky and earth; the land we walk on is a saurian being. This makes every landscape a serpent-body, every plowed field a wound and a nourishment on the same skin. Compare Tiamat divided in Mesopotamia and Ymir in the Norse: the world as the dismembered body of a primordial mother-dragon is one of humanity's oldest cosmologies.

The SGE Reading

Essence stage as substrate: before shadow or gift, the ground itself is the serpent. Nothing you stand on is inert.

Canon Resonance

The land under the pyramid at Chichén Itzá is Cipactli's back; the marble eggs rest on her ribs.

A Micro-Practice

Walk outside barefoot for one minute. With each step, silently name the ground: *back of the sleeping one*. Notice what changes in how you place your weight.
